The Gorah Elephant Camp is located in the middle of the malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park, which was declared as such in 1931 to protect the last remaining elephant herds in the Eastern Cape region; today it has indeed the densest elephant population in the world.
Cape buffaloes, rhinoceros and numerous types of antelopes are among the animals which can be observed along with large herds of elephants in their natural habitat in the Sunday River Valley’s wide bush landscape in the shelter by the Zuurber Mountains. In addition, about 320 different types of birds live in the National Park.

The mansion, dating from 1856, has been restored to its original state and today once again glows in the splendour of the former British colonial era. From the roofed veranda, covering the whole width of the building, you have a wonderful view of the watering-place where herds of animals come to drink, especially in the evening hours. Guests stay in luxurious tented suites, which, with their additional grass roofs, are very comfortable to live in even in summer.
When the Addo Elephant National Park was established, only 11 elephant bulls still lived in the region, today 320 elephants again glide through the fantastic ecological system of the Sunday River Valley.

The outstanding conditions of the Gorah Elephant Camp probably offer the best circumstances for observing large herds of elephants in the whole of Africa.

With its dense, low-lying shrubbery, the thick-leafed spekboom tree or portulacaria afra, which is the elephants’ main source of food, is characteristic of the Park’s landscape.

The rock pool, its crystal water offering welcome refreshment on hot summer days, has been very nicely integrated into the landscape.

Open jeeps are used to stalk the animals and their elevated seats guarantee an excellent view.

In between the twice-daily morning and evening safaris, there’s enough time to relax in the shade of the Boma and watch ostriches, baboons or warthogs glide by.

In addition, there are areas that can be discovered on foot too.
The very well-trained and committed rangers have sole authority to leave the roads in their jeeps so that the animals can be observed at close range.

On account of its facilities, the Gorah Elephant Camp is one of the few game lodges able to welcome children.
In the evening, candlelight creates a cosy atmosphere in the rooms.

On cooler evenings, you can get comfortable by the fireside in the library where you’ll find many interesting things about the history of the various animals in the vicinity.

Light canvas walls, gleaming woods, classical furniture and antiques convey the atmosphere of the golden safari era at the beginning of the 20th century. Because of the typically African grass roofs, the tents stay pleasant even on summer days. All tents have a small private wooden veranda, from which the eye can wander over the wide landscape.

All the tents are fitted with bathrooms, separated by a tent-cloth wall, and all have a large shower. The exceptional double washbasins with their soap-dishes and candlesticks are an attraction in themselves.
