The game lodge at the foot of Table Mountain dating from the 18th century today still exhibits the authentic Georgian style of this period.
Lord Charles Somerset, one of the most famous British Governors of the Cape who had the typical façade added in 1816, resided in Newlands House between 1814 and 1826 and used the intimate residence to entertain his hunting guests.

The residence did not get the name Red House until the late 19th century, when Jonas Michael Hiddingh, its eccentric owner, had all the walls inside and outside painted in an intensive shade of red to protect them from the elements.

English roses and Mediterranean plants thrive particularly well in the Capes optimum climatic conditions and they complement the buildings architecture in a light-hearted fashion.

Surrounded by tall trees and with a view of nearby Table Mountain, the Red House offers romantic and exclusive accommodation only a few minutes from the centre of Cape Town.

The residence is still exclusive: a maximum of 8 guests can stay in the three suites and separate cottage.
The romantic vine-covered cottage for 2 people is located in the middle of the garden a bit apart from the main building. Like the suites in the main building, it is perfectly decorated to a high standard. From the lovely terrace, you can look out on to the garden and pool area.

The magnificent and authentically restored antique building is a National Monument. The fact that it is today again being used for its original purpose as a guest-house makes it a piece of living history.
The high ceilings and large windows make the Red House wonderfully light and airy. The sunbeams filtering in make the antique wooden floors glisten.
The lounge with its tall glass double doors leading to the terrace is a wonderful place to drink afternoon tea, escape with a book, or swap experiences with the other guests over an aperitif in the evening.

The recurring leopard motif effectively complements the classical décor, giving the room an African flair, as do the magnificent ceiling lights made from illuminated ostrich eggs.

It’s Service with a capital S in the Red House, where offering guests every possible comfort and making them completely happy is the basic idea and motivation of the Dutch couple who own it.
